Nepal earthquake: the ground deformation measured from space

The radar acquisitions of the new generation satellite Sentinel-1A of the European Program Copernicus allowed us to analyze the ongoing seismic phenomena and the permanent effects of the ground movements caused by the violent earthquake of magnitude 7.8 that struck Nepal on April 25, 2015.

The study has been conducted by a team of researchers at the Institute for Electromagnetic Sensing of the Environment of the National Research Council of Naples (IREA-CNR) using differential radar interferometry, the technique which allows to measure ground deformations even in the order of a few centimeters on very large areas from space.

The figure shows the obtained interferogram, ie the map of the surface deformation induced by the earthquake, which is in a time interval ranging from April 17 to April 29, 2015. Each color band (fringe) indicates a ground shift of approximately 3 cm, with a maximum deformation of about 1 m. The displacement occurred as a result of the earthquake and subsequent shocks. It is the surface response to the fault plane displacement in depth.

The activity has been conducted as part of the agreement between IREA-CNR and the Civil Protection Department (DPC), and in the framework of the TEP-Quick Win project (ESA) and I-AMICA High Technological Infrastructure for Integrated Monitoring of Climate and Environment project, which is funded by MIUR under the National Operative Programme (PON).

The earthquake of magnitude 7.3 struck the Nepal area on 12 May 2015 and it is the one that, among all the aftershocks, released the biggest energy after the main event of the last April 25th.

Researchers at the Institute for the Electromagnetic Sensing of the Environment of the Italian National Research Council generated a map of the ground displacement induced by this new earthquake through the Differential SAR interferometry technique, by exploiting data acquired by the

The measured displacement field has been very likely induced by the same structures involved in the main shock of the last April 25th, and it is compatible with the migration towards East of the aftershocks.The deformed area extends for about 40 x 60 km2 Eastward of Katmandu. The detected displacement is of about 70 cm toward the satellite in the maximum deforming area (blue zone in the figure). Sentinel-1A satellite of the European program Copernicus.

The activity has been conducted as part of the agreement between IREA-CNR and the Civil Protection Department (DPC), and in the framework of the Geohazards Exploitation Platform (GEP) project (ESA) and I-AMICA (High Technological Infrastructure for Integrated Monitoring of Climate and Environment) project, which is funded by MIUR under the National Operative Programme (PON).

The SWIS (Salt-Water-Intrusion-Sensor) Project arises from the need of a constant and continuous monitoring to better prevent damages due to salt wedge intrusion in certain areas (es.: Volturno). This event, which has been documented for several years now, mainly involves the deepest soils and can determine serious damage to the environment and agro-industry. The project’s development has been made possible in the framework of the I-AMICA PON program thanks to an idea of Dr. Vincenzo Di Fiore(IAMC-CNR) and to the combination of different skills of the team selected by him. A perfect example of a project based on a multidisciplinary approach.

SWIS is a multi-head sensor able to:
Monitor several physical parameters: Electrical Conductivity (EC in mS), Ambient Temperature (TA in °C), and Water Temperature (TW in °C). Furthermore the upgrade will also provide: a solar panel for power supply, pH and Water Level measurement values (quantities of interest that determine the state of saline intrusions);
Store the datalog in MySQL DB or alternatively in an integrated mass storage device microSD (2GB);
Transmit the data through a GPRS shield TDGGSM_908/900;
Transfer the data to a dedicated web space, obtaining plotted values in real time or in time intervals that best suit the requirements (about 24 updates per day) and that can be easily accessible from smartphones.
The hardware consists of an homemade assembled PCBA (printed circuit board assembly) controlled by the ATmega328P microcontroller (Atmel Corporation). The management software system was written in Wiring (open-source programming framework for microcontrollers, derived from C and C++; http://wiring. org.co) using a specific IDE (such as Eclipse or similar). For the moment we’ve considered 5 stations. Each station, can be in three different states: Online (green icon) – Coming Soon (yellow icon) – Offline (red icon) and it has a dedicated space in a MySQL database (Apache 2.2.22). The data are sent from the sensor via GPRS and the web communication occurs through http protocol; the device is a client that sends information to the server via socket tcp /ip and for the real time visualization, a web page by Java and PHP languages was created.
The power system is continuously monitored and when it falls below a certain threshold, it is sent a sms message to a given phone number, so that an operator will replace it.

Support for the establishment of a PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) for buffalo dairy farms thanks to the development of innovative sensor for monitoring the intrusion of the salt wedge in the coastal area.

During the I-AMICA research activities in the area of the mouth of the river Volturno (Castel Volturno, Campania region), there has been a particular concern to farmers and local ranchers related to the environment. This resulted in an excellent working relationship that favoured important actions in the area thanks to the activities carried out under this PON project. “In fact – says Dr. Vincenzo di Fiore, IAMC-CNR Institute and coordinator of this research activity – is being finalized an agreement with the local producers in order to constantly monitor the quality of soil and groundwater such as to optimize the crop and livestock.

Therefore, it will be possible to provide support for the establishment of a PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) for buffalo dairy farms to value the area and create agritourism and cultural paths connected with the territory and its history”. In this manner, the information acquired by the National Research Council under the PON will be a key point of this action.
