Leibniz-Institut für Troposphärenforschung: training courses on the use of SMPS – Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer.

At the ISAC-CNR Institute of Lamezia Terme, at the IIA-CNR Institute of Rende and at the ISAC-CNR of Lecce were held three training courses on the use of I-AMICA Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer. Lamezia Terme and Monte Curcio-Rende (Calabria region), and Lecce (Apulia),together with Capo Granitola-Marettimo (Sicily), are site of the climate observatories of I-IAMICA, .
Following the successful testing of the equipment acquired by CNR, Kay Weinhold of the Leibniz-Institut für Troposphärenforschung of Leipzig (Germany) has shared with the fellows and technical staff of I-AMICA all the details of these sophisticated sistems.
The SMPS sistem allows to monitor the size distribution of the aerosol, from the smallest (size of a few nanometers) characteristics of the particles of neoformation, to those of Aitken (20-100 nm) and accumulation (100 nm-1um), i.e. those that accumulate into the atmosphere until they are leached from clouds and / or rain.
These observations are useful for observations and studies of climate and air quality and also allow to characterize the polluted or clean air masses, their origin and their age.
